An empty lamp means you have a Wisp in your town.

... kill it with fire? no you talk to it, in the GC one he cleaned up all the weeds in your town for playing a game of hide and seek... dunno if it still works like that

Try Gamefaqs or something...it'll probably give you more insight.

If anyone is curious this is what I found...He turns up in your time at the late time of midnight and on during the night. If you find him, talk to him and he'll want you to help him find his empty lamp. Once you find the lamp, go in your attic and rub it first. You will then have a wish granted out of a possible three. He can either remove all the weeds from your town (my personal favorite), smash all the roaches in your house, or give you a rare items that's not easily found in stores.
